AbstractThe radiation use efficiency (RUE) model is based on the linear relationship between accumulated absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (AAPAR) and above-ground biomass production (P). A constant parameter, representing de photosynthetic and respiratory processes, denoted as RUE is multiplied by AAPAR to estimate crop productivity. However, RUE may change significantly when crop is growing under environmental stress conditions, e.g. water or nutrient shortage. In the present study field remote sensing spectral reflectance measurements were used to estimate AAPAR for wheat during the seasons of 1999 and 2000 at the experimental farm of the University of Taubaté, São Paulo State, Brazil. Two wheat cultivars were grown under three soil water levels and four nitrogen levels in a split-split-plot design. Results showed that RUE varied significantly under water stress and between years. Therefore, RUE model seems to be of limited use to estimate biomass production in tropical field conditions where PAR is not a limiting growth factor.
